Why This Page Exists
Student competition teams rarely lose because a single part was badly designed. They lose because two well-designed parts did not work together, because a requirement was misread in September and discovered at the competition, or because the one person who understood the power distribution board graduated.
Systems engineering (SE) is the discipline that addresses exactly these failure modes. This page collects practices, heuristics, and hard-won lessons from professional systems engineers — translated into the scale, budget, and calendar of a student team.
The INCOSE Foundation is an Educational Partner of the University Rover Challenge and sponsors the Excellence in Systems Engineering Award, judged from Preliminary Design Review and System Acceptance Review materials plus in-field evaluation at the Finals. The inaugural award went to Michigan Mars Rover (MRover) of the University of Michigan at URC2026.
Who this is for: University Rover Challenge (URC) teams primarily. Most of the material transfers directly to FIRST Robotics Competition, CubeSat programs, Formula SAE, RoboSub, capstone design projects, and similar efforts.
